Dana Aala

I am a multimedia artist inspired by nature, and its critical juncture with humanity. Pushing boundaries between media and subject, process and concepts are informed by the idea. My preferred media ranges from painting, print, ceramics, textile and photography. I’m inquisitive and at core a maker, innovator, experimentalist, ecologically focused. By constantly questioning my environment I allow art to be my emotional amanuensis. Starting with sketching from life in chalk or ink, drawing is the scaffolding of my work. Photography helps me record and document ideas. Reading, crucial research, informs my practice. Inspired by, and fascinated with old disappearing arts and crafts, I use traditional and sustainable materials. Influenced by my worldwide travels, and my native Slovakia, my current work addresses urgent topics of existence and everyday life; female representation, community, immigration, feelings of isolation and belonging.  I want my art to provoke an emotional response in its audience.
