Introduction to Signwriting - Weekend Course

February 24th | 25th - 9am til 6pm

Over the weekend you shall get to know all the key basics to signwriting -

Brush techniques; lettering styles; hand drawn typography and design; blending and shadows.

You will make two panels to take home with you. The first will be a single letter to practice blending, shadows and outlines. The second will be a larger panel of your own design.

Course Plan

Over the course we shall be covering the following.....

Introduction to Brush Technique - We shall learn how to correctly handle a chisel edged signwriting brush and get the right paint consistency. We will learn the 6 main strokes that are used to paint the alphabet.

Building an Alphabet - Using the 6 brush strokes we have learnt we shall build a painted alphabet in the block letter style.

Drawing and designing - we shall look at how to draw typography and plan out our designs for our final project panels.We will make two panels.The first wil be a single letter focusing on bold typography design, blending, and shadowing.The second panel will be a word and design of your choice, bringing in your own inspiration for style, colour and decorative design.

Painting the panels - Creating these panels will give you the opportunity to practice the skills you have learnt, and bring more understanding to all the aspects involved in creating a hand painted sign.

Need to knows

• All materials and equipment are provided on the course.

• We work with oil enamel paint and white spirit so please be aware that we will be working with strong vapours and dress appropriately for painty work.

• Lunch! A Vegan soup and bread shall be provided, and some butter and cheese for dairy eaters.

Cancellations made 2 weeks before the course start date will be eligible for a full refund. Cancellations made less than 2 weeks before the start date will be eligible for a 50% refund (100% if I can fill the spot). Cancellations made less than 7 days before the course start date will not be eligible for a refund unless I can fill the spot.
